Course Brief: Does Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) have a future central to the modern corporation? Is CSR a fad that will fade away as hard economic realities lead shareholders to reassert their primacy in corporate governance? Or is it time for the massive resources and matchless creativity of business entities to be applied for the greater benefit of all stakeholders, not just shareholders? It is clearer than ever that the global future is intertwined with corporate wealth creation. The critical question therefore is not whether to harness the creativity, innovation and competitive drive of business, but how. This professional development program explores the potential of CSR for addressing the major concerns of the 21st century: climate change, transnational migration, healthcare for rapidly aging populations, the public cost of poverty, global standards for production and fair trade.

Course content includes the evolution of the modern corporation; the hegemony of shareholder value and the emergence of stakeholder governance; origins and development of CSR; business and government, and their potential roles in tackling global challenges; needed legal and regulatory frameworks; CSR and the 21st century corporation. The course will include study visits and case studies of CSR innovation by leading corporations, seminars and participatory workshops.
